Central Bank of Peru to Develop Digital Currency 0 19

The Peruvian central bank, which is the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, is planning on developing its own central bank digital currency (CBDC), much like some of the other prominent economies in the world. Julio Velarde, the central bank’s president made this important announcement and said that the CBDC would be designed to be primarily used as a means of payment. However, Velarde did add that because of the existing uncertainty in the market, it wasn’t the ideal time for the central bank to present such a currency. The president of the Reserve Bank of Peru stated that the institution was already working on developing a national central bank digital currency (CBDC).

Julio Velarde had made the announcement in the previous week at the 59th virtual edition of the executive summit that’s held annually. He said that creating such a currency is essential because the future is expected to be digital. He stressed that they were working on creating a digital currency and stated that they were involved in a number of projects with other central banks, including Singapore, Hong Kong, India and more. Velarde said that they were thinking that digital currency would end up prevailing in the future.

While their central bank digital currency (CBDC) remains in the early stages of development, the president said that this would put the country in the same class as other economies of the same size that are also developing their own digital currencies. However, Brazil and Mexico are the two countries that are usually highlighted when it comes to CBDC advancements in the same area. The cryptocurrency design in Peru appears to be focused on assisting the payment sector of the country. According to Velarde, the future of the payments sector is going to be radically different in a period of eight years.

He said that by making this effort, Peru is hoping to make advancements in the field, similar to what other economies appear to be doing. However, Velarde also acknowledged the fact that Peru simply lacked the resources that are necessary for completing this project right now and it is also not ready to face the risk that the Peruvian economy would have to deal with if the project was to be completed right now. Thus, the head of the central bank has stated that it is not exactly the ideal time for them to be pursuing such a project.

A number of economic actors in Peru had been surprised by the announcement of the central bank’s President. This was primarily because the country is not known as a nation that has been particularly friendly towards these digital currencies generally. As a matter of fact, Peru is still in the initial stages of embracing cryptocurrencies in general and no legal framework exists in the country for providing support to cryptocurrency activity or even CBDC activity in the economy. Introducing a CBDC is something that countries like China are doing, whereas countries like El Salvador had decided to go down a completely different route, as they adopted Bitcoin as legal tender.
